NCDD is proud to join our friends at Kansas State University in announcing that KSU is the new home for the much-touted certificate program in Dialogue, Deliberation, and Public Engagement (DDPE). As we announced at the 2012 NCDD conference in Seattle, NCDD is the “Core Collaborator” for the DDPE program. Our supporting members receive a 10% discount on tuition, and NCDD resources will be featured in the curriculum.

The Institute for Civic Discourse and Democracy at KSU is offering the award winning graduate level DDPE Collaborative Certificate Program beginning in March 2013.  The Collaborative Certificate Program in Dialogue, Deliberation, and Public Engagement (DDPE) features the founding DDPE faculty members, who continue to work with the transformational learning model that is the foundation of DDPE’s 7-year history, though it will now be offered in a more flexible and accessible format.

This year’s course (the first after the relaunch) will take place March 25 through August 19, 2013.

NCDD is excited to see this important course re-launched this year, not only because we’re involved and look forward to playing a role in making DDPE a valuable program, but because this program is important for the professionalization of our field.  Some of our most successful NCDD members have participated in the DDPE course, and we’re excited to see that trend continue.  Dialogue, deliberation, and public engagement work is not easy, and the certificate program helps practitioners to master this nuanced, challenging work.

If you have taken the course, please add a comment and let us know what you appreciated about the course, and why you think other NCDD members should participate!

The program is composed of four component courses:

  1. Foundations for Making Wise Choices in DDPE (Collaborative learning at a distance, March 25 – May 19, 2013)
  2. Face-to-Face Practice Intensive in Making Wise Choices in DDPE (May 25-28)
  3. Advancing Toward Mastery in Making Wise Choices in DDPE (Collaborative learning at a distance, June 1 – August 14)
  4. DDPE Symposium: Sharing Practices for Making Wise Choices in DDPE (August 17-19)

This distinctive program strives for the development of mastery through building the skills, knowledge and intuitive sensibility that are needed to make wise choices about how to bring forms of dialogue, deliberation, and engagement into situations where they are most effective.

Designed and delivered in collaboration with The International Institute for Sustained Dialogue, the Kettering Foundation, and the Public Dialogue Consortium, the DDPE program focuses on proven approaches as well as current innovations in dialogue, deliberation, and public engagement. It is led by an outstanding faculty of scholar-practitioners who have played key roles in developing these approaches and innovations — Hal Saunders, Phil Stewart, Keith Melville, Jan Elliott, Linda Blong, Lyn Carson, and John Dedrick.

The program also features guest speakers who join participants on Phone Dialogues. The guests are widely recognized as scholars and innovative practitioners in the field.  Previous featured guests have included NCDD members like Carolyn Lukensmeyer, Juanita Brown, Martha McCoy, Joe Goldman, Bob Stains, Shawn Spano, Kim Pearce, Joe Peters, Janette Hartz-Karp, and Jim Fishkin (among others).
